The government is investing approximately $17 million to enhance community-based drainage and maintenance projects through the Waterways Ministry for the 2024/2025 fiscal year. Minister Vatimi Rayalu disclosed these plans during a parliamentary session, answering questions about ongoing projects within the ministry. The investments aim to improve drainage systems, irrigation, and flood mitigation while addressing climate-related risks.

In total, there are nine work programs being implemented across the nation, with $16.65 million sourced from state funding and an additional four donor projects worth $480,000. The initiatives include riverbank stabilization, coastal protection, and watershed management programs.

Key projects under the drainage and flood protection program encompass various village locations, such as:

– Sawani Village, Naitasiri – $280,000
– Matainoco Village, Rewa – $300,000
– Naivilaca Village, Rewa – $350,000

Furthermore, the coastal protection program will target areas from Tailevu to Ra, including significant funding for Ovea Village, which will receive $650,000 for protective measures.

Minister Rayalu also highlighted ongoing efforts in improving irrigation for agricultural development. The ministry has distributed 15 irrigation kits costing $138,000 and has completed a gravity-fed irrigation dam of $69,000 in Cakaudrove. Notably, seven out of eight rice irrigation schemes have been maintained successfully, signifying proactive agricultural management.

Additionally, the ministry is finalizing a $US5.2 million grant agreement with the Pacific Community aimed at constructing nature-based seawalls to enhance coastal resilience against climate change. This grant will support projects in various villages across Fiji, reinforcing the commitment to environmental sustainability.

By investing in infrastructure upgrades, the government aims to bolster community resilience, enhance agricultural productivity, and support rural development. These projects underscore the importance of a collaborative approach to addressing environmental challenges and ensuring that local communities can thrive in the face of adversity.
