Jone Usamate, an opposition member of Parliament, has urged the Government to ensure that all vehicles are utilized for their designated purposes. In a recent statement, Usamate emphasized that government vehicles are vital assets necessary for the delivery of public services.
He expressed concern regarding the usage of government vehicles, particularly focusing on issues such as speeding and unsafe overtaking, which pose risks to all road users. Usamate highlighted that the use of rotating flashing lights in vehicles during non-emergency situations violates legal regulations. He also noted his alarm over the number of government vehicles parked at private residences and community police posts, both during weekdays and weekends.
According to Usamate, the Government’s transport policy clearly outlines regulations regarding vehicle parking but appears to be largely ignored. He pointed out that the policy mandates that government vehicles should be parked at official garages or designated car parks at the end of each business day and during weekends, unless prior authorization is obtained for exceptions.
Usamate provided further insights, stating that during peak morning hours, many government vehicles can be observed traveling from private homes to government offices, often picking up officials along the way. He reminded that, under the current policy, only permanent secretaries are entitled to government vehicles, and such practices should cease, as they significantly strain public resources.
