“Government Vehicles Under Fire: Are They Misused?”

Opposition Member of Parliament Jone Usamate has urged the Government to ensure that all vehicles are utilized for their designated purposes. In a recent statement, Mr. Usamate emphasized that vehicles are essential government assets necessary for delivering public services.

He expressed concerns regarding the usage and operation of government vehicles on the roads, highlighting issues such as speeding and overtaking, which pose serious risks to the safety of all road users. Mr. Usamate also noted that rotating flashing lights are being used in vehicles during non-emergency times, which is contrary to existing laws. A significant concern he raised is the number of government vehicles parked at private residences and community police posts during weekdays and weekends.

Mr. Usamate pointed out that the government’s transport policy clearly outlines regulations concerning the garaging of vehicles, yet it appears to be largely ignored. According to this policy, vehicles should be parked at their respective agency’s official garage or car park at the end of each business day and on weekends, unless special permission has been obtained.

He added that a simple observation during peak morning hours reveals numerous government vehicles traveling from homes to offices while picking up officials en route. The policy specifies that only permanent secretaries should have access to government vehicles. Mr. Usamate underscored the need for these practices to cease, as they can significantly deplete public resources.
