Opposition MP Jone Usamate has urged the government to ensure that all vehicles are utilized for their designated purposes. In a recent statement, Mr. Usamate emphasized that government vehicles are crucial assets needed for the effective delivery of public services.
He expressed concerns regarding the improper use of government vehicles and their operation on public roads. “Speeding and overtaking pose serious risks for both government vehicles and other road users,” he stated. Additionally, he pointed out that the use of rotating flashing lights on vehicles during non-emergency times is unlawful. A significant concern, he added, is the number of government vehicles parked at private residences and community police stations during the week and on weekends.
Mr. Usamate noted that the government’s transport policy provides clear guidelines on vehicle parking, but it seems to be largely ignored. According to the policy, drivers are required to return vehicles to their official garage or designated parking area after each business day and on weekends, unless special permission has been granted.
He remarked, “One only needs to observe traffic during peak morning hours to see the number of government vehicles commuting from private homes to offices, often picking up officials along the way. The policy clearly states that only permanent secretaries have the right to government vehicles. These practices should cease, as they represent a significant drain on public resources.”
