Government Vehicles Under Fire: Are Rules Being Ignored?

Jone Usamate, a member of the Opposition in Parliament, has expressed grave concerns regarding the operation of Government vehicles on Fiji’s roads, citing violations of traffic regulations. In a recent statement, Usamate pointed out that government vehicles are frequently observed speeding and overtaking, which poses significant risks to other road users.

He stated that the use of rotating flashing lights on these vehicles during non-emergency situations is unlawful. Usamate emphasized that these vehicles are essential government assets necessary for delivering public services.

The Opposition MP further alleged that some government vehicles are being stored at private residences and community police posts, both during the week and on weekends. He noted that the Government’s Transport Policy is explicit about vehicle storage, stating that “drivers shall park vehicles at the agency’s official garage or car park at the end of each business day and weekends,” except in cases where prior authorization has been obtained.

Usamate mentioned that anyone travelling on the roads during peak morning hours can observe numerous government vehicles making their way from homes to offices while picking up officials en route. He highlighted that the policy restricts government vehicle use to Permanent Secretaries only, urging an end to these practices, which he believes waste public resources.

FijiLive has sought a response from the Ministry of Finance, Transport, and Logistics Department regarding these allegations.
