Government Vehicles Directive Still in Effect.

A directive issued in May 2023 mandates that all government vehicles be turned off when not in use is still in effect, according to Civil Service Ministry permanent secretary Parmesh Chand. In a circular sent to all permanent secretaries and heads of department, Mr. Chand stated this was part of efforts to reduce carbon emissions and operating costs within the civil service.

“Drivers of Government vehicles (with the exception of vehicles used directly to transport HE President) must turn off the ignition and air conditioning when the vehicle is not in use,” Mr. Chand noted in the circular. “In other words, drivers should not keep the vehicle ignition and air conditioning running while waiting.”

Mr. Chand confirmed to this newspaper that the directive remains in force. “This is part of our cost-cutting measures as well as our commitment to reducing carbon emissions whenever possible,” he said.
