Government Vehicle Misconduct Sparks Outrage in Fiji

Opposition Member of Parliament Jone Usamate has expressed significant concerns regarding the way Government vehicles are being operated on Fiji’s roads, stating they often disregard traffic regulations. In his statement, Usamate pointed out that issues such as speeding and reckless overtaking by government vehicles are posing serious risks to public safety.

He noted the inappropriate use of rotating flashing lights on these vehicles during non-emergency situations, which he emphasized is against the law. According to Usamate, government vehicles are crucial assets meant to support the delivery of public services.

Additionally, Usamate accused the government of improperly garaging these vehicles at private homes and community police posts, both during weekdays and weekends. He referenced the Government’s Transport Policy, which clearly states that drivers are required to park vehicles at the official agency garage or designated parking area at the close of business hours, except in cases where prior permission has been granted.

Usamate further commented that anyone traveling during peak morning hours would observe numerous government vehicles commuting from personal residences to various offices, often picking up officials en route. He pointed out that the policy dictates that only Permanent Secretaries should have access to government vehicles, and he urged an end to these practices, arguing they significantly drain public resources.

FijiLive has made inquiries with the Ministry of Finance, Transport, and Logistics Department regarding these concerns.
