Government Urged to Tackle Reckless Driving Threatening Road Safety

Opposition Member of Parliament Ketan Lal is urging the government to take immediate action against the reckless speeding of truck and bus drivers, as well as other heavy vehicles. His call comes after a series of accidents, with the most recent incident involving a Goundar Shipping Ltd bus in Lautoka, underscoring the irresponsible behavior of some drivers.

Lal emphasizes the urgency of addressing this persistent issue, stating that speeding vehicles pose a serious danger to all road users. He argues that merely raising awareness is no longer sufficient and that decisive measures must be implemented to ensure road safety.

To tackle this problem, Lal has proposed that the Land Transport Authority (LTA) mandate the installation of speed limiters, or Speed Lock Systems, on all public service vehicles (PSVs) and trucks. He suggests setting the maximum speed limit at 80 km/h to align with national regulations. While recognizing that some vehicles are already limited to 60 km/h, he believes a uniform speed lock at 80 km/h will offer flexibility while significantly lowering the risk of accidents due to speeding.

Lal stressed that many accidents are preventable and called for immediate action rather than waiting for further tragic incidents to motivate change. He urges the LTA, government, and all relevant stakeholders to prioritize road safety measures to protect citizens.

This push for stricter regulations reflects a growing concern for road safety, and there is hope that implementing these measures could lead to a significant reduction in accidents, ultimately saving lives. By promoting accountability among drivers and enhancing safety features in vehicles, the initiative could create a safer driving environment for everyone.
