The government has reiterated its commitment to supporting civil servants experiencing domestic violence, urging them to seek help through the toll-free hotline 1560. Luke Rokovada, chairman of the Public Service Commission (PSC), emphasized a strict zero-tolerance policy towards gender-based violence. His remarks follow the tragic death of Sainimere Tuinasakea, a civil servant allegedly killed by her husband in Suva.

Rokovada stated that Tuinasakea’s death highlights the urgent need for enhanced awareness and action against domestic violence in society. He affirmed, “No one should ever have to endure such violence,” calling for a collective effort to address this growing issue.

In response to these incidents, the PSC is set to implement mandatory training on gender-based violence for public servants, aimed at fostering a culture of respect and safety within the workplace. This initiative is in alignment with the broader calls for community support and preventive measures voiced by Minister for Women, Children, and Social Protection, Sashi Kiran, who also stresses the importance of collective responsibility in addressing domestic violence.

This movement not only aims to provide immediate assistance for victims but represents a hopeful shift towards creating an environment where every individual can feel safe and respected. The integration of community support systems, educational initiatives, and a strong governmental stance against violence points to a collaborative effort to foster a culture that prioritizes the dignity and well-being of all individuals in Fiji.

Statistics show that nearly two-thirds of women experience physical or sexual violence at some point in their lives in Fiji, underlining the critical nature of this ongoing crisis. As the government and community leaders unite in their efforts, there is hope for a transformative change wherein future generations can grow up free from the fear of domestic violence.
