Government Shake-Up: What’s Next for Fiji’s Leadership?

The appointment of Selina Kuruleca as the Permanent Secretary for Justice, moving from her previous role in the Education Ministry, marks the “beginning” of further changes within the administration, according to Public Service Commission (PSC) chairman Luke Rokovada.

In a recent interview in Nadi, Rokovada emphasized the necessity of this reshuffle. He clarified that it was not related to performance evaluations or directed by the Prime Minister. “The commission made the decision with the Prime Minister’s agreement,” he stated, reinforcing that all appointments or transfers of Permanent Secretaries are decided collectively with the Prime Minister’s consent.

Ratu Meli Nacuva has been appointed as Acting Permanent Secretary for Education while maintaining his position as Permanent Secretary for Youth and Sports. Rokovada praised Nacuva’s extensive experience in public administration and education policy, which he believes will help enhance the quality and accessibility of education.

Upon inquiry regarding the reasoning behind these changes, Rokovada characterized the reshuffle as a standard procedure. “It’s time for some of them to move around, experience new environments, and make contributions to their new organizations,” he noted, adding that the position of PS Justice is newly created and, despite difficulties in finding a suitable candidate through advertising, Kuruleca is a strong fit for the role.

Rokovada also addressed concerns about Kuruleca’s background in the justice sector, asserting that the commission is confident this new role will utilize her skills and experience effectively. He mentioned that an Acting Permanent Secretary for Multi-Ethnic Affairs and the Sugar Industry will be appointed soon, following the resignation of Yogesh Karan.
