Government Seeks Year-Long Cooperation for Community Relocation Plan

The government has formally approached the Fiji Muslim League (FML) to provide a one-year timeframe to develop relocation plans for over 400 families residing in a settlement in Nabua. The residents had recently received eviction notices from FML, giving them a deadline of December 28 to vacate the property.

During a meeting with the affected residents, Minister for Housing and Local Government Maciu Nalumisa emphasized the government’s commitment to aiding those displaced. He announced that a survey would be conducted starting Friday to gain a better understanding of the residents’ circumstances, as many may be renting homes while owners reside elsewhere.

Minister Nalumisa stated, “We need to know all this basic information before we map our relocation strategies.” He confirmed that the government has requested FML’s cooperation for a year to help identify suitable land for the families and secure budgetary support. The FML has expressed a willingness to engage its council on this matter.

Additionally, the Minister met with various stakeholders, including representatives from the Housing Authority and the iTaukei Lands Trust Board, to explore options for assisting the residents. He expressed hope that families would find joy during the upcoming Christmas season while the government works on solutions.

The iTaukei Lands Trust Board has already begun identifying potential relocation sites. Minister Nalumisa noted that while previous relocation plans had been proposed, some individuals were hesitant to move to the suggested areas. The focus now is on considering elements of a relocation plan that would encourage all families to relocate successfully.

This development emphasizes the importance of community welfare and compassion in times of housing instability. With the cooperation of the Fiji Muslim League and various government agencies, there is hope for a resolution that prioritizes the needs and well-being of the families affected.

In summary, the government is actively working towards a compassionate approach to assist families facing eviction, ensuring they have the time and resources needed to relocate successfully.
