The government of Fiji has reached out to the Fiji Muslim League (FML) for a one-year timeframe to develop relocation plans for more than 400 families currently residing in a settlement in Nabua. Residents of the settlement were issued eviction notices by the FML, with a deadline to vacate the land set for December 28.

In a meeting with the residents, Minister for Housing and Local Government, Maciu Nalumisa, expressed the government’s commitment to assist these families during the transition. He announced that a survey starting on Friday would gather essential information regarding the residents’ circumstances, such as housing arrangements.

Nalumisa stated that understanding the residents’ living situations is crucial before formulating effective relocation strategies. He emphasized the need for time to find suitable land and secure budget support for the move, reassuring the residents that the FML is prepared to communicate these needs to its governing council.

The minister also noted that discussions with various stakeholders, including the CEO of the Housing Authority and the Director of Lands, were held to explore support options for the affected families. He expressed hope that, despite the challenges they face, the residents would still find joy during the Christmas season.

Furthermore, Nalumisa mentioned that the iTaukei Lands Trust Board is collaborating to identify potential land for relocation. While there have been previous plans that included sites proposed by the FML, some families have hesitated to accept those options. The government is considering various incentives to encourage families to agree to the relocation.

This situation highlights the government’s proactive approach to ensuring that families are treated with compassion during a difficult transition. The commitment from both the government and the Fiji Muslim League to assist these families indicates a collaborative effort to address housing and community needs.

Summary: The Fiji government is working with the Fiji Muslim League to assist over 400 families in Nabua facing eviction, requesting a year to finalize relocation plans. Surveys will be conducted to gather information, and discussions with stakeholders are underway to find suitable land for relocation. The government aims to ensure the residents are supported amid the challenges, fostering a sense of community and compassion as they approach the holiday season.
