Finance Minister Professor Biman Prasad has pointed to a troubling trend in government-funded projects, deeming many as novelty, rushed, and incomplete due to inadequate planning. During a recent statement, he cited lengthy delays in significant projects like the Lautoka swimming pool and Govind Park, which he argues exemplify the failures of the previous government in effectively executing initiatives.
Prasad highlighted numerous projects that faced harsh criticism for their execution, emphasizing that the mishandling of these initiatives resulted in considerable financial waste. “When projects are handed to cronies or supporters of the previous regime, failure is inevitable,” he said, referencing the Lautoka swimming pool, the FNU Labasa campus, and several others.
The minister expressed concern that the current coalition government is still grappling with a backlog of incomplete projects. According to him, while focus has been placed on new constructions, the previous government’s mismanagement has left the current administration to deal with numerous unfinished initiatives.
This sentiment echoes recent critiques from independent Member of Parliament Jone Usamate, who similarly called for improved performance in the 2024-2025 financial year. He underscored the importance of effective project implementation to prevent underspent budgets and inefficiencies, which can undermine trust in government institutions and negatively impact citizens’ quality of life.
Emphasizing the need for merit-based project allocations rather than political appointments, Usamate echoed Prasad’s worries about slow implementation and execution across various ministries. The inefficacies noted in these governmental processes are crucial reminders of the need for improved governance and accountability.
In a hopeful note, both officials suggest that acknowledging past missteps may foster a renewed commitment to strategic planning, enhanced oversight, and better resource management in future projects. This could ultimately lead to improved infrastructure and services that better serve the communities in Fiji, demonstrating a focused path forward amidst ongoing challenges.
