Unity Fiji Party leader Savenaca Narube warns that the recent increase in parliamentarian salaries could have significant cost implications on the economy, potentially leading to higher prices and increased poverty.
Narube stated that “all this could have been avoided by a government leadership that respects the principles of fairness, selflessness, and respect.”
He highlighted the irony of the current government being described as charismatic, saying, “the same government leadership has been labelled as Charismatic,” and accused this leadership of manipulating laws and processes for their benefit at the expense of the nation.
According to Narube, this government had promised not to raise their salaries but has failed to keep their word, exacerbating issues such as poverty, unemployment, a cost-of-living crisis, and rising social injustice.
“Emphasising charisma at this time is not only misplaced but also very misleading,” Narube said, stressing that charisma will not solve the country’s problems.
Instead, he called for leadership that prioritizes the welfare of the people, upholds fairness, moral integrity, and selflessness, and maintains trust through action and adherence to promises.
“We need a leadership that we can trust. Charisma is way down the list of the attributes of leadership that Fiji needs right now,” Narube concluded.
