“Government Initiates Groundbreaking Laws for Counter Narcotics Bureau”

The government is in the process of drafting new laws that will facilitate the National Counter Narcotics Bureau’s ability to work alongside the police. During an appearance on The Lens@177, Home Affairs Minister Pio Tikoduadua explained that bureau members currently collaborate with the police to perform their duties.

Minister Tikoduadua emphasized the need to formalize this arrangement, stating that the laws are being developed “very quickly.” He added that they are not starting from scratch but are instead learning from other jurisdictions to make this initiative successful.

Although the bureau’s activities are currently covered under existing police powers, the creation of a new government department necessitates specific legislation to ensure its effective operation. Minister Tikoduadua noted that enabling the bureau to carry out its work is crucial, although some aspects are sensitive and cannot be openly discussed at this time. This sensitivity largely stems from the bureau’s primary function of information gathering, which currently utilizes available police powers.

To develop these laws, the Ministry of Home Affairs is collaborating with the Office of the Solicitor General and various experts. This effort aims to establish a legal framework that not only allows the counter narcotics bureau to perform its tasks effectively but also holds it accountable.
