Non-essential government services will be temporarily suspended for the Christmas and New Year’s holidays on Friday, December 27, Monday, December 30, and Tuesday, December 31, 2024. Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka, who also serves as the Minister for Civil Service, announced that essential services will continue to operate with a reduced number of staff to ensure they meet the needs of the public.

Rabuka emphasized the importance of allowing government employees the opportunity to spend quality time with their families during this festive season. He encouraged Permanent Secretaries to support staff in taking their leave during this closure period, promoting a healthy work-life balance.

Additionally, the Prime Minister stated that Permanent Secretaries will have the discretion to decide whether to keep skeleton staff for the delivery of certain crucial services during this time. He expressed his gratitude to civil servants for their hard work and dedication to nation-building throughout the year, wishing them and their families a peaceful, joyous Christmas and a prosperous New Year.

This temporary closure not only prioritizes family time for government employees but also reaffirms the government’s commitment to maintaining essential services for public welfare. Such measures can foster morale and well-being among staff, ultimately benefiting the community as a whole. Families can look forward to spending quality time together during the holidays, which is crucial for strengthening familial bonds.

Overall, this initiative demonstrates a balanced approach to governance, ensuring that while essential services are maintained, employees are also valued and given the opportunity to recharge and celebrate the holiday season.
