The Minister for Local Government and Housing, Maciu Nalumisa, has highlighted the significant challenges the Government faces in addressing issues related to squatter settlements across Fiji. Families from over 400 households at the Fiji Muslim League settlement in Nabua, Suva, are among those who have recently received eviction notices. Additionally, residents of Bhindi subdivision, Waidamu settlement, and a few families in Navua are also facing similar situations.

Minister Nalumisa emphasized the need for government assistance in these challenging times, stating that the task at hand is considerable. He urged community members to refrain from constructing homes on land that does not belong to them and advised those affected to approach the Ministry of Housing or the Lands Department for guidance on legal land ownership. This proactive approach aims to prevent future conflicts over land and ensure that affected families receive the necessary support.

The Minister also noted the importance of collaborative efforts with larger landowners to promote awareness regarding land ownership and illegal occupancy. Encouraging open dialogue could lead to better solutions and assistance for those living in squatter settlements.

Despite the daunting nature of this task, there is hope for constructive outcomes as the Government seeks to improve collaboration and awareness, ultimately aiming to serve and assist vulnerable communities across Fiji.

This situation serves as a reminder of the complexities of land ownership and the importance of proactive measures to address housing issues comprehensively.
