The rising trend of school dropouts in Fiji has become a pressing issue, according to Opposition member Hem Chand. In his remarks reacting to Education Minister Aseri Radrodro’s comments about the 2024 Year Eight Examination results, Chand pointed out a troubling statistic from 2023: 1,162 students left primary school before completing their education, representing a stark increase of 34 percent from the previous year’s dropout figure of 755.
Chand noted that this surge in dropouts is concerning, especially given the introduction of a free education scheme by the former Bainimarama government in 2014. He highlighted that last year’s dropout rate was the highest recorded in the last five years, with over 1,000 students leaving before finishing Year 8.
He attributed the current challenges to factors such as inadequate transport options, which he believes significantly affect students’ ability to attend classes. Additionally, Chand raised alarm over drug-related incidents in schools and the need for better teacher retention strategies, urging the current government to take a closer look at these issues.
