A driver of a Government vehicle was arrested early yesterday morning for driving under the influence of alcohol. This incident has sparked a firm reminder from the Fiji Police Force regarding their commitment to uphold the law without any double standards.
The arrest occurred after Nasinu Police received a tip-off and intercepted the Government vehicle in Makoi. Upon testing, the driver was found to have exceeded the legal alcohol limit, leading to his detention.
Acting Deputy Commissioner of Police (A/DCP) Sakeo Raikaci confirmed that the Government vehicle was confiscated, and the relevant Permanent Secretary of the Ministry was notified about the incident. He emphasized that traffic officers will be conducting sporadic checks on Government vehicle drivers, including those of the Police, to prevent any misuse of government resources.
A/DCP Raikaci reiterated that such measures are crucial to ensure equitable enforcement of the law, asserting that no driver is above the rules governing road safety. This commitment to maintaining integrity and accountability reflects positively on law enforcement’s role in promoting public safety.
In a broader sense, this incident not only underscores adherence to legal standards but also highlights the importance of responsible behavior, especially among individuals in positions of authority. It sends a strong message that accountability is pivotal in fostering a culture of safety and respect for the law in society.
