Deputy Prime Minister and Finance Minister Professor Biman Prasad has announced a series of stringent measures aimed at government drivers who engage in reckless or unsafe driving practices. He emphasized the necessity for all government drivers to adhere strictly to road safety regulations and to use government vehicles responsibly.
To enforce this accountability, the government plans to impose strict disciplinary actions, which may include surcharges, suspensions, and even termination for drivers found violating these regulations. This initiative follows a directive for Permanent Secretaries and transport officers to actively monitor driver conduct and vehicle utilization.
Enhancing oversight, the Ministry of Finance will provide daily speed reports to relevant ministries through a GPS tracking system that monitors the real-time speed of government-leased vehicles. In addition, a toll-free complaints hotline, 1526, has been established for the public to report any instances of reckless driving or speeding involving government vehicles.
Professor Prasad expressed confidence that these immediate measures will lead to improvements in driver behavior, ultimately reducing road accidents, ensuring public safety, and maintaining the integrity of government operations.
These initiatives align with broader efforts to enhance accountability within public service and reflect a commitment to uphold road safety standards. The measures not only aim to protect citizens but also to reinforce responsible use of taxpayer-funded resources.
