The government reaffirms its dedication to assisting rural and maritime communities, as evidenced by the recent provision of essential farming tools to three agricultural cooperatives in Serua and Namosi. This initiative aims to enhance agricultural productivity and food security in these regions.
Sakiasi Ditoka, Minister for Rural and Maritime Development and Disaster Management, presented these tools during his visit to Serua. The support is part of the Ministry’s Rural Outer Island Development Programme, designed to boost agricultural activities in remote areas by ensuring farmers have access to necessary resources.
Minister Ditoka highlighted the importance of improving farming practices, stating, “One of the programs that the Ministry of Agriculture is implementing is aimed at increasing yields for our farmers. While some of the farming cooperatives have tractors, they often lack the implements needed to utilize them effectively. We decided to fill this gap to better support these communities.”
In addition to the agricultural assets, Minister Ditoka also provided an outboard engine to the villagers of Nuku in upper Serua, improving transportation for over 70 residents. This outboard motor was funded through the Seafaring Entrepreneurial Assistance (SEA) Programme, which aims to enhance the capabilities of communities dependent on maritime resources.
For those interested in future assistance programs, Ditoka encouraged members of cooperatives to prepare applications for the upcoming financial year, beginning in August, to ensure they can take full advantage of government support.
The initiatives reflect a broader commitment to enhancing food security and improving the livelihoods of rural communities by empowering farmers with the tools and resources they need for success. The government’s proactive approach could inspire more cooperative initiatives, fostering collaboration among farmers and boosting overall agricultural productivity in Fiji.
This summary showcases a hopeful outlook for the involved communities, reminding them that support is on the way and emphasizing the importance of cooperation in achieving common goals.
