Government Accused of Negligence as Infrastructure Crisis Deepens in Fiji

The Shadow Minister for Justice, Ketan Lal, is urging the Coalition Government to prioritize the pressing infrastructure issues facing Fiji, which he claims have led to significant hardship for its citizens. He pointed to the collapse of the Vuniyasi Bridge in Nadi as a stark example of the government’s failure to ensure the safety and well-being of the people. According to Lal, the incident nearly cost four lives and has cut off community access to essential roads and disrupted water supplies, all due to what he describes as negligence and inaction.

Lal expressed frustration over the apparent disarray of the Fiji Roads Authority (FRA) and the Public Works Department (PWD) during the government’s tenure. He criticized the administration for its focus on political strategies rather than addressing the critical deterioration of infrastructure. “Despite substantial budgets and elaborate rhetoric, our infrastructure is crumbling,” he stated.

He questioned how many more lives must be endangered before the government takes decisive action. Lal also highlighted that while the Minister for Infrastructure may be more visible in public appearances, substantial work is not being achieved. He called the current situation unacceptable and an affront to the people of Fiji, stressing that proactive maintenance and investment in infrastructure are crucial.

Lal emphasized the need for accountability, demanding either the resignation or removal of the Minister, and encouraged the Prime Minister to consider a Cabinet reshuffle to include competent leadership focused on urgent national challenges. “Fijians deserve a government that prioritizes their needs over political theatrics. We have reached a point where the time for excuses has ended; decisive leadership is essential,” he concluded.
