Goundar Shipping Limited (GSL) celebrated a significant achievement with the launch of two new vessels, the M.V Lady Daya and the Motor Tanker Captain Lai, at an event held last night.
The gathering also introduced the company’s new fast ferry service, Goundar Fast Ferry PTE Ltd.
Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka, the event’s chief guest, stated that these advancements represent a key milestone for Goundar Shipping and Fiji, as the nation enhances its maritime capabilities and strengthens connectivity among its islands, ultimately fostering economic growth.
He noted, “These vessels, the M.V Lady Daya and Tanker Captain Lai, both honor the Goundar family’s parents, symbolizing the dedication Goundar Shipping has toward the people of Fiji.”
For decades, the Goundar family has been a leader in the maritime sector, providing vital services that connect islands and support local communities.
Rabuka emphasized the legacy of the late Narayan Sami Goundar and Captain Ilaitia Goundar, known as Captain Lai, whose vision contributed to the achievements celebrated during the event.
Goundar Shipping Limited now caters to around 90 percent of Fiji’s population and boasts the country’s largest fleet and crew.
The M.V Lady Daya is expected to enhance the efficiency of transport between the islands, significantly aiding the economy by improving the flow of goods and services.
The Captain Lai is particularly noteworthy as Fiji’s first locally owned, operated, and registered tanker, specializing in the transportation of fuel oil and hazardous materials, creating new opportunities for local seafarers.
The Prime Minister recognized George Goundar and his family for continuing the legacy of Narayan Sami Goundar with determination and passion. He praised their indispensable contributions to the maritime industry and their commitment to training the next generation of seafarers, including women.
Rabuka highlighted the importance of gender equality and inclusivity across all sectors, commending Goundar Shipping for demonstrating what can be achieved when opportunities are provided to all.
The Prime Minister affirmed the Government’s commitment to supporting this essential sector to ensure smooth movement of people and goods across the islands.
He concluded by stating that the government will collaborate closely with stakeholders, including Goundar Shipping, to maintain robust, safe, and sustainable maritime infrastructure for future generations.
Since GSL’s establishment in 2010, the company has significantly expanded its fleet with vessels such as the Lomaiviti Princess II in 2012, and the MV Lomaiviti Princess III in 2015, followed by the Lomaiviti Princess IV, V, and VI in 2018. The fleet has been further enhanced with additional vessels from Japan and South Korea, culminating in the introduction of the MV Joseph P. Lomaiviti Princess XI and XII in 2021.
