George Goundar, Managing Director of Goundar Shipping Limited, has distanced his company from a recent incident at Suva Harbour involving the Lomaiviti Princess II, asserting that the company is not at fault. In remarks to FBC News, Goundar maintained that there were no technical issues related to Goundar Shipping in this case, insisting that any inquiries should be directed to the Ministry of Transport and Fiji Ports Corporation.

He emphasized, “We are clean, our hands are clean,” and encouraged reporters to seek insights from personnel at the wharf regarding the incident. This provides clarity amid ongoing scrutiny of Goundar Shipping’s operational safety standards, particularly following similar past incidents involving their fleet, like the grounding of the MV Lomaiviti Princess VII near Moala Island.

There is presently no official response from Fiji Ports Corporation, and the Maritime Safety Authority of Fiji (MSAF) has also declined to comment further on this specific event. This lack of information continues to fuel questions regarding oversight and safety protocols within Fiji’s inter-island transport.

The proactive acknowledgment from Goundar Shipping and the absence of reported injuries or damages so far provide a hopeful angle on the situation. As investigations evolve, it may lead to strengthened safety measures, improving maritime operations and ensuring a more reliable experience for passengers in the future. The industry’s commitment to effective management in these situations is crucial for maintaining public confidence.
