Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka announced that an investment from Google is expected to generate over 3,600 jobs by 2030, marking a significant enhancement in Fiji’s digital landscape. During the groundbreaking ceremony for the new Google ICT Facility in Natadola, the Prime Minister emphasized that these jobs would not only provide employment but also open avenues for skill development, allowing individuals to contribute meaningfully to their communities and secure their futures.
The anticipated investment of $250 million (approximately F$566.4 million) aims to boost Fiji’s GDP, underscoring the project’s considerable economic impact. This progression is expected to bolster the business process outsourcing (BPO) and knowledge process outsourcing (KPO) sectors in Fiji significantly.
Mr. Rabuka highlighted the importance of enhancing digital connectivity and resilience, which he sees as essential for the growth of these sectors. The Vice President of Google Network Infrastructure, Brian Quigley, shared details about the substantial infrastructure investment, which includes four submarine cables. One of the cables will connect Natadola to Los Angeles, California, with the ship arriving at Natadola Bay in early January.
Additionally, Google will establish a cable linking Natadola to Valparaiso, Chile—the first connection between South America and the Indo-Pacific region. Mr. Quigley also mentioned plans for a connection to Australia and another cable to Japan through Guam and the Mariana Islands. This initiative is part of the broader Pacific Connect Initiative, intended to position Fiji as a digital hub connecting various island nations.
In a notable example of progress, Mr. Quigley mentioned that later this month, the first submarine cable for Tuvalu will be laid, replacing their current reliance on satellite internet, thus improving connectivity for the region.
This investment heralds a transformative chapter for Fiji, bringing opportunities for growth, digital advancement, and skill acquisition. It is a promising step toward establishing the country as a key player in the global digital landscape, enhancing its economic resilience and connectivity.
This exciting development not only reflects the strong partnership between Google and Fiji but also demonstrates the potential for job creation and economic growth in the digital age. With these advancements, Fiji is on the cusp of a brighter, more connected future.
