Russia is demanding an astronomical amount from Google, reportedly over 2 undecillion rubles, which equates to an unprecedented penalty of approximately $20 decillion. This colossal sum dwarfs the size of the global economy, which the International Monetary Fund estimates at around $110 trillion. For context, Google’s parent company, Alphabet, has a market value of about $2 trillion.
The fines stem from Google’s actions of blocking pro-Russian channels on YouTube, which have been disabled since 2022. In response, a Russian court has mandated the restoration of these channels, warning that penalties would increase by double every week if Google fails to comply. Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov acknowledged the staggering figure, emphasizing its symbolic nature and asserting that Google should not restrict Russian broadcasters on its platform.
