Golf’s Future in Fiji: Inspiring the Next Generation

Promoting golf among the younger generation in Fiji is essential for increasing the sport’s popularity both locally and throughout the Pacific region. Shaun Hwang, the vice-president of the Fiji Golf Club, expressed this view during a gathering at the club in Vatuwaqa, Suva.

Hwang emphasized the need for youth engagement in sports, particularly in the Pacific, stating that it is crucial for young people to get involved. He noted that aspiring young golfers can find inspiration in notable figures such as Fijian-born Vijay Singh, a former world number one golfer.

“We have a successful player like Vijay Singh, and we need to build on that legacy,” he remarked. Hwang, who has been playing golf for ten years and has resided in Fiji for 28 years, often visits the club on weekends with fellow golfers.

In addition to these initiatives, the Stableford Event competition, sponsored by Nagel Goundan, commenced yesterday, attracting 60 participants for the tournament, which will be held every weekend. The weather was mostly overcast but cleared up as golfers and fans joined the activities at the golf club in Vatuwaqa.
