A remarkable charity event unfolded last Saturday as 136 players participated in the Fiji Society for the Blind Charity Golf Tournament, hosted by the Pirates Golf Club at the Fiji Golf Club in Suva. This initiative not only showcased golfing talent but also highlighted the importance of community support for a vital cause.
Throughout the tournament, the Society provided free eye screenings, reminding attendees of the critical mission to support the visually impaired. Participants were treated to a spirited charity auction, featuring items such as a luxury bed from Comfort Home, a signed and framed Drua rugby jersey, and luxurious resort stays graciously donated by Castaway Island and the Pearl. The auction, along with a well-supported raffle, helped raise over $30,000, all dedicated to the Society’s work.
Tournament Controller Susie Yee captured the essence of the day, stating, “It was more than just a golf day — it was the community coming together to help others see a better future.” The winning team, DMC, comprised of Mahmood Buksh, Rajesh Kumar, Janen Prasad, and Laisa Digitaki, achieved an impressive score of 56 points, earning them top honors.
The event concluded with a celebratory dinner courtesy of BSP, effectively blending competition and camaraderie while reinforcing community spirit. Barbara Farouk, Executive Director of the Society, expressed her gratitude, thanking all sponsors, players, and volunteers for their invaluable support, emphasizing that it is instrumental in making a meaningful difference.
The success of this event, reminiscent of past philanthropic tournaments held in Fiji, reinforces the positive impact that sporting events can have on health initiatives and community solidarity. Such gatherings not only foster a sense of togetherness but also serve as a platform for raising awareness and mobilizing resources for critical causes. With continued community engagement, the future looks bright for both golfing events and charitable endeavors in Fiji.
