A total of 62 golfers gathered for the Roger Probert Challenge Trophy, sponsored by Fiji Gas, at the Fiji Golf Course in Vatuwaqa on Saturday. This annual event celebrates the legacy of Roger Probert, the founder of Ready Gas in Fiji, which later transformed into Fiji Gas. Probert, born on March 19, 1917, married Lesley Harvie in 1948 and raised three children: Harvie, Lyndall, and Merran. He was an enthusiastic member of the Lautoka Golf Club and often took part in the regional golf matches against the Eastern team from the Sugar City.
Women’s Golf Fiji president Susie Yee expressed her appreciation for the beautiful weather that allowed the tournament to take place without issues, especially in contrast to the previous year’s cancellation due to unfavorable conditions. She noted that this tournament is a significant highlight of the golfing calendar, emphasizing the community’s enthusiasm and support for the sport.
This year, the event’s success not only honors Probert’s memory but also fosters community spirit and camaraderie among golfers, reinforcing the importance of such gatherings in the sporting landscape of Fiji. Moreover, it reflects the resilience of the local golf community in maintaining traditions even in the face of challenges.
This yearly tournament not only commemorates a local legend but also brings together golfers of all skill levels to celebrate their passion for the game in a lively and supportive environment.
