Two of golf’s leading figures, Scottie Scheffler and Xander Schauffele, expressed their frustrations regarding a decision by PGA Championship organizers to not permit preferred lies during the tournament’s first round at Quail Hollow Club. Due to the lack of ability to lift, clean, and place their balls in the muddy fairways, players encountered difficulties controlling their shots. Scheffler, the world’s number one, highlighted the challenge of the mud balls, stating, “You spend your whole life trying to learn how to control a golf ball, and due to a rules decision all of a sudden you have absolutely no control over where that golf ball goes.” He finished the day with a two-under-par 69, which kept his aspirations for a third major title intact, while Schauffele ended with a one-over-par 72.
Schauffele echoed Scheffler’s sentiments, sharing, “It is what it is, and a lot of guys are dealing with it, but it’s just unfortunate to be hitting good shots and to pay them off that way.” He noted that many players were likely sharing similar frustrations due to the challenging conditions.
