Youth participation in golf is on the rise in Fiji, exemplified by the recent Stableford competition held at the Fiji Golf Course in Vatuwaqa, which attracted 59 participants. Jerome Kado, a member of the Fiji Golf Club, shared his enthusiasm for the sport, encouraging young people to engage with golf, which he described as a pursuit of perfection that remains enjoyable even with limited practice time.
Kado, who has been playing golf for several years, noted the diverse age range of competitors, pointing out that the event included men, women, and youths, thereby promoting a welcoming atmosphere. He acknowledged that attendance may have been impacted by simultaneous major competitions in Denarau, but he expressed optimism about the growing interest among young players in the sport.
“I’ve enjoyed golf and the friendly competition it brings. It’s encouraging to see youths participate and utilize their talents beyond other sports like rugby,” Kado stated, highlighting a positive trend in youth involvement in golf, which he saw as crucial for the future of the sport.
This emphasis on youth engagement aligns with earlier remarks made by other club officials, such as Shaun Hwang, the vice-president of the Fiji Golf Club, who has been advocating for greater youth participation and support systems within the sport. Past events organized by the club have echoed this sentiment, emphasizing that golf can be an accessible sport for young athletes, not just an elite pastime.
The growth in youth participation and the supportive community fostered at events like these exhibit a hopeful outlook for golf in Fiji. With committed advocates like Kado and Hwang, the sport stands poised for a vibrant future, nurturing a new generation of golfers who are passionate about their involvement in the game.
