Marist Brothers High School’s Lepani Bavai recently claimed the gold medal in the 400m senior boys race at the school’s inter-house competition held at the HFC Bank Stadium in Suva. Despite this victory, Bavai is uncertain about participating in the upcoming Fiji Finals (Coca-Cola Games) due to a scheduling conflict with his school’s rugby tour in New Zealand, where the team will compete against various New Zealand school rugby teams.
While reflecting on his unexpected win, Bavai downplayed his athletic achievements, stating, “I didn’t expect to win it as I’m just here to compete for my house,” emphasizing his primary commitment to rugby rather than athletics. Bavai attributed his success in the race to divine intervention and expressed gratitude towards his parents for their continual support.
Additionally, another athlete, Ebenezer Saukuru from Marist Brothers High School, is aiming to break the javelin intermediate boys record at the Fiji Finals. He hopes to surpass the current record of 67.23m set by Leslie Copeland in 2005. Saukuru is not only focused on javelin but is also participating in events like the 4×100 meters relay and long jump.
In a broader context, the MBHS inter-house competition saw Alphonsus House winning with 17 gold medals, followed closely by Claudius House. The event showcased notable athletic talent and highlighted the importance of such competitions in nurturing future sporting stars.
Overall, the enthusiasm demonstrated by students like Bavai and Saukuru reflects a growing commitment to sportsmanship and excellence among young athletes in Fiji. As they balance their academic and athletic pursuits, they embody the spirit of hard work and dedication that continues to inspire their peers.
