Gold Medalist Faces Tough Choice: Athletics or Rugby?

Gold Medal Glory or Rugby Dreams? One Athlete Faces a Tough Choice!

Lepani Bavai of Marist Brothers High School recently achieved a remarkable feat by winning the gold medal in the 400m senior boys race at the school’s inter-house competition, held at the HFC Bank Stadium in Suva. Although thrilled with his win, Bavai is faced with a potential conflict that may prevent him from competing in the upcoming Fiji Finals (Coca-Cola Games). His school’s rugby team is scheduled to tour New Zealand concurrently, where they will pit their skills against various local school teams.

Upon reflecting on his surprise victory, Bavai remained humble, attributing his success to divine help and the unwavering support of his parents. “I didn’t expect to win it as I’m just here to compete for my house,” he noted, highlighting his primary dedication to rugby over his track pursuits.

In addition to Bavai’s achievements, another Marist competitor, Ebenezer Saukuru, is setting his sights on breaking the intermediate boys’ javelin record at the Fiji Finals. He aims to surpass the current benchmark of 67.23m established by Leslie Copeland in 2005. Saukuru is not just focused on the javelin; he is also preparing for the 4×100 meters relay and long jump events.

The inter-house competition at MBHS featured impressive performances, with Alphonsus House topping the medal tally with 17 golds, closely followed by Claudius House. This event served not only as a platform for showcasing athletic talent but also emphasized the critical role of such competitions in cultivating future sporting stars.

The determination shown by students like Bavai and Saukuru embodies a growing dedication to both sportsmanship and academic excellence among Fijian youths. Their ability to balance rigorous athletic training with educational commitments reinforces the values of hard work and resilience, characteristics that serve as an inspiration to their peers. This spirit of competition and personal growth fuels hope for a bright sporting future in Fiji.
