Concerns are escalating regarding the health and safety risks posed by debris still littering the site of the Gokals warehouse on Amy Street in Suva, six months following its destruction by fire. As Fiji endures cyclone season, the presence of these hazardous materials raises alarms for nearby businesses, pedestrians, and motorists alike.

The warehouse was completely devastated by a fire in July 2025, but remnants of the structure and burnt debris remain untouched at the location. The persistent risks have prompted the Suva City Council to engage with various authorities. Tevita Boseiwaqa, the Council Chair, confirmed that the Council’s Health Department has been in continuous dialogue with the National Fire Authority, the Fiji Police Force, and the warehouse’s owner, Gokals Fiji, to address the situation.

Boseiwaqa explained that the clearance of the site has been delayed due to ongoing investigations by the Fiji Police Criminal Investigations Department. He noted that while the National Fire Authority completed its investigations late last year, the Police CID has yet to provide a conclusive response following a follow-up from the Council in December.

The Council recognizes the urgent health and safety hazards presented by the debris, especially amid the cyclone season, and remains committed to following up with police officials to ensure swift action. Additionally, inquiries have been directed to Assistant Commissioner of Police Crime, Mesake Waqa, who is anticipated to provide further details in the coming days.

As the community grapples with this pressing issue, the Council’s proactive measures and engagement with authorities offer a glimmer of hope for a prompt resolution and enhanced safety for all affected. The ongoing communication emphasizes the importance of community health and safety and the need for quick action to mitigate the risks posed by the remnants of the warehouse fire.
