Goa nightclub fire sparks investigation and compensation plan

Indian authorities launched an investigation and announced compensation for the victims following a tragic fire that swept through a nightclub in Goa, resulting in the deaths of 25 people. The Goa Chief Minister, Pramod Sawant, stated via X that a magisterial inquiry has been ordered to determine the cause of the fire and establish accountability.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his condolences to the families affected by this tragedy. He shared that the government would provide compensation of up to 200,000 rupees (approximately $2,200) to the families of the deceased and 50,000 rupees for those injured in the incident.

The fire broke out at the Birch by Romeo Lane club at 12:04 a.m. local time. Goa’s police chief reported that efforts to control the blaze continued through the night, with all bodies recovered from the site. Images circulating on local and social media displayed firefighters at work and ambulances on the scene, although their authenticity could not be immediately verified by Reuters.

Reports indicate that among the deceased were at least four tourists and 14 club staff members. Goa, known for its beautiful beaches and vibrant tourism scene, attracts approximately 5.5 million visitors annually, including a significant number from abroad. As the state processes this tragedy, the focus remains on supporting those affected and ensuring such incidents are prevented in the future.
