Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Finance, Professor Biman Prasad, participated in the Pacific Island High-Level Roundtable, which was chaired by International Monetary Fund (IMF) Managing Director Kristalina Georgieva. Also present at the meeting was Bo Li, the Deputy Managing Director responsible for the Asia Pacific region.
During the roundtable, Pacific Ministers exchanged insights regarding their ongoing reforms and financing strategies with the IMF. They addressed vital issues stemming from the increasing frequency and severity of natural disasters, economic instability, and the challenges of accessing climate financing.
In his address, Professor Prasad highlighted the IMF’s crucial role in promoting greater climate financing. He pointed out that the financial resources currently available to the Pacific region constitute only a small fraction of what is actually needed to tackle these pressing challenges.
This engagement signifies a collaborative effort to enhance the support structure for Pacific nations facing unprecedented climate threats. As world leaders focus on sustainable development and climate resilience, it is hopeful that increased dialogue and cooperation will lead to substantial improvements in climate financing for vulnerable regions like the Pacific.
Overall, the roundtable showcases a commitment to confronting climate-related challenges head-on, fostering resilience, and working towards a more sustainable future for the Pacific Islands.
