UN Secretary-General António Guterres has called on governments worldwide to fully commit to the energy transition, urging them to ensure that new national climate plans clearly signal a shift toward renewable energy sources. In a significant address, Guterres emphasized the urgency of moving away from fossil fuels and advancing what he described as an “unstoppable” clean energy revolution, even amid current geopolitical challenges.

Highlighting inconsistency in government responses, Guterres criticized the trend of setting ambitious renewable energy targets while simultaneously extending fossil fuel subsidies. He stated that updated nationally determined contributions (NDCs) must be ambitious, transparent, and supported by cohesive policies that reinforce the belief that a transition to clean energy is not only inevitable but also financially viable.

Guterres has invited world leaders to present their NDCs at a high-profile summit set for September 24 on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly. Currently, only 30 out of 195 countries that signed the Paris Agreement have submitted their updated plans, which goes against the originally set February deadline.

A senior UN official expressed that the focus should be on high-quality, ambitious NDCs rather than hastily prepared ones lacking comprehensive stakeholder buy-in. If these plans are presented by the upcoming summit, there will be an opportunity for the UN climate body to assess their collective impact prior to COP30. André Corrêa do Lago, Brazil’s president for COP30, echoed Guterres’ sentiments, highlighting that NDCs should drive job creation, reduce inequalities, and promote prosperity across all nations.

The appeal for action comes as recent statistics indicate that renewables represented an astonishing 92.5 percent of all new electricity capacity in 2024, despite fossil fuels still comprising a significant portion of the global power mix. Guterres highlighted that investments in renewable energy can offer a multitude of benefits, including enhanced energy security and economic growth, particularly for impoverished populations lacking access to electricity.

In response to the significant increase in electricity demands, particularly from data centers, Guterres called for tech giants to commit to powering their operations entirely with renewables by 2030, which could drastically shift the energy landscape and mitigate the reliance on fossil fuels.

The foundation laid by Guterres’ address aligns with previous discussions at international climate forums, such as the Petersberg Climate Dialogue, where leaders reflected on fossil fuel dependency and the necessity for climate action to curb the impacts of global warming. The message has been consistent: urgent and ambitious action is essential to ensure a sustainable future.

The tone of the conference remains hopeful, as the transition to clean energy receives increasing attention. The collaborative spirit expressed by various nations and leaders signifies a growing commitment to groundbreaking climate solutions. Despite the significant challenges that lie ahead, the momentum for renewable energy is building, offering optimism for a healthier and more sustainable future.
