Global Alliance Takes Aim at Rising Crime in Fiji

In an effort to improve skills in investigation and prosecution amid rising crime rates, the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP) has partnered with the Australian Federal Police (AFP) to conduct a training program in Suva this week.

The training commenced on Monday at Suvavou House, with participation from police investigators, the Financial Intelligence Unit (FIU), Fiji Revenue and Customs Services (FRCS) personnel, and ODPP prosecutors.

Acting Commissioner of Police Sakeo Raikaci, who officiated the event, stated that the training aims to help investigators and prosecutors better understand information gathering and litigation under the Proceeds of Crimes Act.

The training is organized into two sessions, focusing on specialized skills for dealing with money laundering and asset confiscation. AFP senior liaison officer, Detective Superintendent Adrian Morton, emphasized that this training will equip Fiji’s investigators and prosecutors with effective tools to combat crime.

Superintendent Morton explained, “The AFP has adopted the principle that tracking money and seizing assets can diminish crime syndicates’ ability to profit from their activities.” He expressed anticipation for the collaboration between agencies, which will support investigators and litigators in enhancing asset forfeiture against those benefiting from crime in Fiji.

Acting DPP Nancy Tikoisuva stressed the necessity of building capacity to address the increasing crime rate effectively.
