Swire Shipping Fijian Drua head coach Glen Jackson has clarified that external pressures regarding a “must-win” situation never influenced his team’s mindset prior to their recent match against the Hurricanes in the 2026 Shop N Save Super Rugby Pacific season. Following consecutive losses, some have speculated on heightened scrutiny surrounding the game, but Jackson emphasized that his focus remained on internal performance rather than external expectations.
“We didn’t really talk about it as a must-win. I know in terms of where you’re at in the table and the media talks about it a lot, it never came across as a must-win for us,” Jackson said. Instead of fixating on the need for a victory, the emphasis was placed on pride and delivering a performance that reflects the team’s capabilities.
Jackson expressed admiration for his team’s defensive efforts against a Hurricanes squad he characterized as exceptionally skilled. “Defensively I thought they were unbelievable. Like I said, the Hurricanes are a quality, quality outfit, coached unbelievably well,” he remarked.
He also acknowledged the progress the Drua has made over the years, highlighting the significant contributions of senior players who stepped up in critical moments. “With some doubt around our performances in the last couple of weeks, it just shows you how this group has gone from year to year. But also our leadership group and our leaders being able to step up at the right times and putting some phenomenal tackles,” Jackson noted.
Looking ahead, the Drua will take a bye this week before preparing to host the Brumbies in Ba next week. The focus on internal growth and performance bodes well for the team’s future as they continue to develop their skills and cohesion.
