FASANOC has expressed its excitement following the Commonwealth Games Federation’s announcement that Glasgow will host the 2026 Commonwealth Games. The event is scheduled to take place from July 23 to August 2, 2026, marking Glasgow’s return as the host city after the successful 2014 Games.
Featuring a compact program with 10 sports spread across four venues within an eight-mile radius, the Games are set to provide an engaging and accessible environment for both athletes and spectators.
Vanessa Kilner, CEO of FASANOC, conveyed her enthusiasm for Fiji’s participation, stating, “We look forward to Fiji taking part in the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow. Fiji boasts a strong history in the Commonwealth Games, highlighted by Apolonia Vaivai’s bronze medal in weightlifting at the 2014 Glasgow Games. Overall, Fiji has garnered four gold, seven silver, and 12 bronze medals across its 17 participations in the Commonwealth Games.
Notable details about the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow include:
– Around 3,000 athletes from approximately 74 Commonwealth nations and territories are expected to compete.
– The sports program will feature athletics, swimming, artistic gymnastics, track cycling, netball, weightlifting, boxing, judo, bowls, and 3×3 basketball, with para-sport events integrated into the schedule.
– More than 500,000 tickets will be made available, allowing spectators to witness top-tier competition.
FASANOC plans to reach out to national federations to begin team selection and preparatory processes, aiming to assemble a strong and competitive team across eligible sports.
