FASANOC has expressed its excitement following the Commonwealth Games Federation’s announcement that Glasgow will host the 2026 Commonwealth Games. Set to run from July 23 to August 2, 2026, this will be Glasgow’s second time hosting the event, returning after the successful 2014 Games.
The compact sports program will include events spread across four venues within an eight-mile radius, ensuring an engaging experience for both athletes and fans. FASANOC CEO Vanessa Kilner shared her enthusiasm for Fiji’s participation, stating, “We look forward to Fiji taking part in the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow. This event is significant for us, and we are excited about the opportunities it presents for our athletes.”
Fiji has a notable history in the Commonwealth Games, highlighted by Apolonia Vaivai’s bronze medal in weightlifting during the 2014 Glasgow Games. Overall, Fiji has secured four gold, seven silver, and twelve bronze medals across its 17 appearances at the Commonwealth Games.
Key details about Glasgow 2026 include:
– Approximately 3,000 athletes from up to 74 Commonwealth nations are expected to compete.
– The sports program will feature athletics, swimming, artistic gymnastics, track cycling, netball, weightlifting, boxing, judo, bowls, and 3×3 basketball, with para-sport events included.
– More than 500,000 tickets will be made available for sports fans to witness high-level competition.
FASANOC will soon reach out to national federations to initiate the team selection and preparation process, aiming to assemble a strong team across various sports. Kilner noted the importance of the Commonwealth Games as a platform for athletes to showcase their skills on an international stage and highlighted the organization’s commitment to inclusivity in Fijian sports through the integration of para-sports.
FASANOC is expected to provide further updates on team selection and preparations as the event approaches.
