FASANOC has expressed excitement over the announcement by the Commonwealth Games Federation that Glasgow will host the 2026 Commonwealth Games. Scheduled for July 23 to August 2, 2026, the Games will return to the Scottish city twelve years after the successful 2014 edition. The event will feature a compact program of ten sports across four venues within an eight-mile area, offering an engaging and accessible experience for both athletes and spectators.

FASANOC CEO Vanessa Kilner shared her enthusiasm for Fiji’s involvement: “We look forward to Fiji taking part in the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow. This event holds a special place in our sporting calendar. We’re excited about the opportunities it presents for our athletes and we anticipate another memorable Games experience.”

Fiji has a rich history at the Commonwealth Games, including a standout performance in the 2014 Glasgow Games, where Apolonia Vaivai earned a bronze medal in weightlifting. Overall, Fiji has claimed four gold medals, seven silver medals, and 12 bronze medals in its 17 participations at the Commonwealth Games.

Notable points regarding the Glasgow 2026 Games include:

– Approximately 3,000 athletes from up to 74 Commonwealth nations and territories will participate.
– The sports program will encompass athletics, swimming, artistic gymnastics, track cycling, netball, weightlifting, boxing, judo, bowls, and 3×3 basketball, with para-sport events included as well.
– More than 500,000 tickets will be available for spectators to witness top-tier competition.

FASANOC plans to issue expressions of interest to national federations to initiate the team selection and preparation process, ensuring a strong and competitive representation across eligible sports.

Kilner emphasized the importance of the Commonwealth Games for Fijian athletes, stating, “The Commonwealth Games provide a vital platform for our athletes to compete on the world stage. We’re particularly excited about the continued integration of para-sports, which aligns with our commitment to inclusivity in Fijian sports.”

FASANOC will continue to provide updates on team selection and preparation as the event approaches.
