Ghee Price Shock: Consumers Brace for Holiday Impact!

A recent survey conducted by the Consumer Council of Fiji (CCF) in major supermarkets along the Suva-Nausori corridor has uncovered a significant jump in the price of a 750ml bottle of ghee, which has surged from an average of $24.02 in August to $31.24 as of last week. The CCF has expressed its outrage over this unexpected increase of over $7 within a short period, highlighting the unnecessary financial strain it places on consumers.

This price hike comes at a particularly sensitive time, with the festive season approaching and ghee being in high demand for various religious ceremonies, traditional cooking, and family gatherings. According to a statement released by the CCF last Friday, although ghee prices are not regulated, it is an essential commodity during this season, making the sudden increase both troubling and unacceptable. The timing of this price surge has left consumers with few options for this vital ingredient, which is essential for many households during the celebrations.

In response to the situation, the Council has begun discussions with ghee suppliers and supermarkets to understand the reasons behind this abrupt price rise.
