The German Embassy in Suva recently celebrated its first anniversary in Fiji, marking a year since its establishment.
German Ambassador to Fiji, Dr. Andreas Prothmann, emphasized that Fiji and Germany share common interests, and the bilateral relationship is just beginning to develop.
The celebration attracted hundreds, including government officials, diplomats, and members of the public, who came together to observe German Unity Day, a commemoration of Germany’s reunification after years of division.
“German reunification on October 3rd, 1990, stands as one of the happiest moments in our nation’s history, following a peaceful revolution in East Germany and the subsequent fall of the Berlin Wall. We are fortunate to have lived in a united Germany for over a generation,” stated Ambassador Dr. Prothmann.
The establishment of the embassy in Suva has strengthened diplomatic ties between Germany and Fiji, fostering collaborative efforts in climate action, trade, and development.
“We are proud to be part of the diplomatic community in the Pacific and a member of Team Europe alongside our French, Spanish, and UK counterparts. Our collaboration with the Pacific Island Forum and other regional organizations is a testament to our commitment. Germany enjoys excellent relations with Fiji and the Pacific, as we’re aligned in values and interests. We also support upholding the rules of international order, seen in our votes for UN resolutions opposing Russia’s aggression in Ukraine,” the Ambassador remarked.
This year, the second German Unity Day celebrations in Suva placed a special emphasis on showcasing Germany’s 16 diverse federal states, highlighting their unique histories, cultures, and traditions, thus offering Fijians insight into Germany’s rich cultural heritage.
