Germany Celebrates Milestones in Fiji: Unity Day and Embassy Anniversary!

The German Embassy in Suva celebrated its first anniversary in Fiji last night, having established the embassy just a year ago.

German Ambassador to Fiji, Dr. Andreas Prothmann, highlighted that Fiji and Germany share common interests, indicating that their relationship is just beginning to blossom.

The celebration drew hundreds of guests, including government officials, diplomats, and members of the public, who gathered to mark German Unity Day, commemorating Germany’s reunification after years of division.

“German reunification on October 3, 1990, stands as one of the happiest moments in Germany’s history following a peaceful revolution in East Germany that led to the fall of the Berlin Wall. We are privileged to live in a united country for over a generation now,” stated Ambassador Dr. Prothmann.

The establishment of the German Embassy in Suva last year has strengthened diplomatic ties between Germany and Fiji, facilitating increased cooperation in areas such as climate action, trade, and development.

“We’re pleased to be an active part of the diplomatic community in the Pacific. We proudly collaborate with our French, Spanish, and UK colleagues as part of Team Europe here in Suva, and we work closely with the Pacific Island Forum and other regional organizations. Germany maintains excellent relations with Fiji and the Pacific. We align our values and interests with Germany and Europe in this region, defending the rules-based international order, as demonstrated by our support for UN resolutions condemning Russia’s aggression in Ukraine,” the Ambassador added.

This year’s celebrations marked the second edition of German Unity Day in Suva, focusing on showcasing Germany’s 16 diverse federal states.

The event highlighted the unique history, culture, and traditions of each region, giving Fijians a glimpse into Germany’s rich cultural diversity.
