Germany Celebrates a Milestone in Fiji: Unity Day & Embassy Anniversary

The German Embassy in Suva commemorated its first anniversary in Fiji last night, marking a year since its establishment.

German Ambassador to Fiji, Dr. Andreas Prothmann, emphasized the shared interests between Fiji and Germany, noting that their relationship is just beginning.

The event drew hundreds of participants, including government officials, diplomats, and members of the public, who came together to celebrate German Unity Day, remembering Germany’s reunification after a prolonged period of division.

“German reunification on October 3, 1990, stands as one of the happiest moments in our history, following a peaceful revolution in East Germany that contributed to the fall of the Berlin Wall. We are fortunate to have enjoyed a united country for over a generation now,” remarked Ambassador Prothmann.

The embassy’s establishment in Suva has strengthened diplomatic ties between Germany and Fiji, leading to increased collaboration in areas such as climate action, trade, and development.

“We are pleased to be part of the diplomatic community in the Pacific. As a proud member of Team Europe alongside our colleagues from France, Spain, and the UK, we work closely with the Pacific Island Forum and other regional organizations. Germany has strong relations with Fiji and the Pacific islands, sharing common values and interests. We uphold the principles of an international order, exemplified by our support for UN resolutions opposing Russia’s aggression in Ukraine,” the Ambassador stated.

This year marked the second celebration of German Unity Day in Suva, with a focus on showcasing Germany’s 16 diverse federal states.

The theme highlighted the distinct history, culture, and traditions of each region, offering Fijians a glimpse into Germany’s rich cultural landscape.
