Ryan Gerard encountered a hiccup at the finish but still managed to secure the clubhouse lead at the PGA Championship held at Quail Hollow with a five-under-par 66. The North Carolina native, in only his third major tournament, had a solid start, building a three-stroke lead before bogeying his final two holes.

Gerard’s round began impressively as he made four consecutive birdies and sunk an eagle on the par-five 15th hole. However, challenges arose when he missed the green on the par-three 17th and ended up in a fairway bunker at the last. Despite the late slip, Gerard expressed satisfaction with his performance.

Close behind Gerard is Ryder Cup captain Luke Donald, alongside New Zealand’s Ryan Fox and a few others, each sitting one stroke back. Donald achieved a notable round, playing bogey-free, an achievement that is rarely seen from sitting captains in PGA Championship history, highlighting his strong mental play.

In a stark contrast, Rory McIlroy, who recently celebrated his career Grand Slam victory at the Masters, struggled in his first major since that achievement. Known for his success at Quail Hollow, McIlroy finished with a three-over-par 74, facing trouble off the tee and unable to find his rhythm.

Scotty Scheffler ranked as the world’s number one, managed to recover from early setbacks, closing with a two-under-par 69. He noted the importance of finishing on a high with a birdie, demonstrating the resilience required in competitive golf.

As the tournament progresses, hopes remain high for McIlroy and others, as they navigate the challenges of the course. The PGA Championship promises to showcase the thrilling unpredictability that characterizes professional golf, with fans eagerly awaiting more drama as the tournament unfolds at Quail Hollow.
