The Great Council of Chiefs (GCC) is closely observing the ongoing impasse between the President and the Judicial Services Commission (JSC). While acknowledging the political tensions, the GCC urges that these should not overshadow urgent social issues confronting the nation.

This deadlock follows reports indicating that the President has not accepted the JSC’s recommendations regarding leadership changes at the Fiji Independent Commission Against Corruption (FICAC). Chairman Ratu Viliame Seruvakula emphasized the importance of prioritizing the wellbeing of the people amidst these disputes, stating that the Council is monitoring the situation prudently.

Ratu Viliame expressed that the GCC believes national attention should not be diverted solely toward political maneuvers, especially when pressing social challenges continue to surface. He mentioned critical issues such as the increasing prevalence of illicit drugs, rising HIV cases, and the overwhelming pressures families and youths are facing in various communities.

Highlighting the GCC’s earlier resolution from 2024, Ratu Viliame reiterated that the 2013 Constitution is viewed as inadequate and should be reconsidered. However, he stressed that their current focus is primarily on the immediate social issues rather than political debates.

The Chairman called on national leaders to find a balance between constitutional discussions and the urgent social priorities demanding attention. He emphasized that discussions around the Constitution should not distract from the fundamental responsibility of safeguarding the community’s welfare, particularly for children and families.

Ratu Viliame further affirmed the GCC’s commitment to its longstanding mandate to protect the interests of the iTaukei people and contribute positively to the nation’s stability and unity since its inception in 1876. He urged all leaders to act responsibly, channeling equal energy into both political processes and initiatives aimed at combating societal challenges.
