The Cabinet has given its approval to the iTaukei Affairs (Great Council of Chiefs) (Amendment) Regulations 2024. These regulations aim to empower the Great Council of Chiefs (GCC) in fulfilling its responsibilities, particularly in advocating for iTaukei interests and making important decisions regarding these matters.
The amendments are intended to enhance the GCC’s advisory role in several critical areas, including nation-building, fostering racial harmony, and promoting social cohesion. The GCC will prioritize strategic initiatives related to good governance, leadership, economic empowerment, preservation of culture and heritage, resource ownership, education, health and well-being, environmental issues, climate change, and addressing violence against women and children.
This endorsement signifies a commitment to strengthening the voice of the iTaukei community and ensuring their concerns are effectively addressed within the national framework. This positive step reflects a broader recognition of the importance of inclusive governance and community representation in promoting social harmony and development.
By focusing on these key areas, the amendments seek to not only empower the GCC but also to contribute to a more unified and resilient society that respects cultural diversity and promotes well-being for all citizens.
