The Great Council of Chiefs is advocating for a revision of the 2013 Constitution, emphasizing the need for changes to laws that significantly impact the i-Taukei community. Following their first day of discussions in Suva, GCC Chairperson Ratu Viliame Seruvakula expressed that amending the Constitution is essential for the council to progress.
Currently, approximately 33 laws directly affect the i-Taukei people, with 16 of those already amended, while the remaining are still under review. Seruvakula pointed out the necessity for government action to facilitate these amendments, noting that there is still a considerable list of legislation that remains unchanged or is being evaluated.
He also highlighted comments made by Solicitor-General Ropate Green Lomavatu regarding the status of existing and revised laws. Although he acknowledged the challenging nature of this undertaking, Seruvakula encouraged a pragmatic approach, urging the community to adapt to and utilize the existing legal framework effectively.
The meeting will proceed this afternoon, allowing further discussions on these critical issues.
This call for constitutional amendments reflects the GCC’s commitment to ensuring that the rights and needs of the i-Taukei people are adequately represented in legislation. With constructive dialogue and collaborative efforts, there is hope for meaningful progress and development in preserving the heritage and interests of the i-Taukei community.
